Our Future

Our Future

APA Studies as a field continues to respond to social, cultural and political changes, both globally and domestically. APIDA/A is also not a static term – identity formation is a continuous process, and so too is the work of building solidarity and community amid the continued realities of migration, global economic change, and shifting social and political landscapes. Our recent programing demonstrates some of the ways in which the field of Asian Pacific American Studies more generally, and the APIDA/A campus community more specifically, has changed in the last two decades. Some struggles have remained the same. And yet, the work of meaningfully casting a broad net over what counts as APA Studies, as well as who makes up the APIDA/A community, continues in our commitment to build new and advance existing and enduring partnerships across campus.

In a display of the interdisciplinary nature of the APA Studies program’s core mandate, this flyer details a November 10, 2023 special lecture by Professor Sunera Thobani (Professor of Asian Studies, University of British Columbia), hosted by MSU’s Muslim Studies Program, in coordination with the APAS program (among others). The lecture, “Contesting Islam, Constructing Race and Sexuality: The Inordinate Desire of the West,” examined the contemporary ways that the West constructs Islam and Muslims as the "enemy" against which the West also identifies itself.
